Montclair Library Anime Event

Join East Side Mags at the Montclair Public Library at 4:30pm on October 24th for a special screening of Ghost in the Shell and an introduction to Japanese anime film by lecturer Erik Jacobson.

Erik Jacobson (Montclair State University) leads a discussion of Ghost in the Shell to understand the futuristic world inhabited by the characters and its implicit message for our contemporary society. The film, itself, is about a female cyborg agent who along with the Internal Bureau of Investigations is investigating “The Puppet Master,” a mysterious and threatening computer virus capable of infiltrating human hosts.

This event includes cosplay in partnership with Eastside Mags.

This program is part of Montclair State University’s Roboto-San: The Contrasting Visions of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics in Japanese & Western Cultures. This series was made possible by a grant from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Additional support has been provided by Montclair Public Library, Montclair Historical Society, Clifton High School Robotics, Montclair Society of Engineers, and Montclair TV34.

Marleni Gomez

Marleni Gomez is a digital Illustrator and cosplayer from Paterson, NJ. She enjoys going to comic and anime conventions all over the East coast and creates work that is fun and thought provoking. She is currently a senior at Montclair State. Her work can be seen at Heyouwitheface.com.

Mauro Balcazar

Mauro Balcazar (MrMauro) started drawing professionally in 2011 with his debut piece inspired by the film “The Last Dragon.” Since then, Mauro has fallen in love with illustrating art inspired by pop culture. Currently, his work can been seen on io9.com and on various audiobook covers for R.L Stine (Thriller Chiller Theater), Matthew Laube (Ancient Awakening), and Andrew Lang (Golden Hood, Cinderella).

Shades is his 1st published art book inspired by his favorite pop culture characters in history! Mauro currently resides in NJ and can be found drawing daily until the crack of dawn. (Send help.)

Fred Paparella

Montclair resident and visual artist, Ferdinando (Nando) Paparella, employs unique concepts and color theory to communicate with his audience. Using aerosol and acrylic paint he draws a line between contemporary and abstract to discuss individual conflict, growth, and relationships with those around us. The end products are warm, positive aesthetics that can be enjoyed by all.  He will also be LIVE PAINTING in the shop!

The Art Walk takes place from 6pm-9pm on May 20th!  Artists and Artisans will each have a table, showcasing their work, that you can also purchase directly from them!

Looking forward to seeing everyone for this fantastic event!
